Intentional and Purposeful Living. I frequently feel I am caught in the day-to-day that is life with four children ranging from 3 to 12. I believe a lot of women today are overwhelmed by all the possibilities and self-induced "pressures" of life, so we choose to just "ride the waves" instead of being intentional in our life decision- making and planning. This leads frequently to unattainable or unrealistic expectations that result in disappointment and disillusionment.

This is a book for women from every walk of life, whether single, married, widowed, divorced, working, stay-at-home mom and everything in-between. From the biblical purposes of man, woman and marriage, to considering and properly stewarding our giftings and aptitudes, and keeping our focus in the proper place and trusting God and managing fear, it is all in this book!

The book is well-researched and very mindful to point out what God's Word says about issues. There is also a DVD Bible Study series with study guides available.

My Psalm 23 revelation today

I was at a "Lunch and Learn" study at church on Tuesday and we were challenged to read Psalm 23 daily and meditate on it.

I missed yesterday, and decided this morning to read it from the amplified version on Bible Gateway. I'd like to share verse 5 with you and the related footnote. I can't make it any better, so I won't try.

Psalm 23:5 "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my [brimming] cup runs over"

Footnote -

"It is difficult for those living in a temperate climate to appreciate, but it was customary in hot climates to anoint the body with oil to protect it from excessive perspiration. When mixed with perfume, the oil imparted a delightfully refreshing and invigorating sensation. Athletes anointed their bodies as a matter of course before running a race. As the body, therefore, anointed with oil was refreshed, invigorated, and better fitted for action, so the Lord would anoint His "sheep" with the Holy Spirit, Whom oil symbolizes, to fit them to engage more freely in His service and run in the way He directs--in heavenly fellowship with Him."

Actions have consequences. Sometimes when we make a "mistake", in our rush to "fix" what we have done, we actually make things worse. Esther Lange and Linus, her fiance, are dealing with the consequences of a hasty decision and are now in an engagement that they don't relish. This doesn't make waiting for his return from the frontlines any easier. She spends her time nursing GIs.

Esther receives a letter from a field medic, Peter, with a letter from Linus inside. Peter's letter informs Esther that Linus was mortally wounded and Linus's letter troubles her even further.

She continues corresponding with the medic and finds out he is a doctor at a station nearby. Esther makes a surprise visit. Esther is the one surprised. The medic isn't who he seems to be. Linus's family is pressuring Esther too. What choices will Esther make next?

Nightingale a stand alone in the series Brothers in Arms.

This was a real page turner for me. I liked the theme of redemption, for Esther, Linus, and her new medic friend. I also contemplated how people rush to judgment about others based on stereotypes, especially when fear is involved. Warren's books are always good, but this one is AMAZING!

Strategically Small

Bigger is better. The trend in church thinking in the 90s. The megachurch. But is it true? I know that personally I have been in several church homes. An extremely large one growing up, an extremely small one thru my teens and early 20s and then a mid-sized/smallish church from my mid 20s thru today (mid 30s). I have experienced the large church that allows people to "hide" or take advantage of church programs and services. I have been in the small church that needed all its members to pull off an event. I know it comes down to a personal preference.

In reading The Strategically Small Church, I was amazed at how much it identifies my personal feelings about a church home. While the book is meant for pastors and ministry leaders (I do not belong to either group), I felt the author expressed much of what I would like pastors to know. O'Brien discussed the trend to authenticity as a standard for gen Xers. I know this rings true for me. I cannot stand "fake". He mentions that our generation is "suspicious, sarcastic and unimpressed". Not flattering, but true. We want "genuine" and all the mess that surrounds it. Small churches tend toward the ability for more authentic relationships and faith.

The book also discusses church programming, the attitude of consumerism, the training up of other leaders, the equipping of the congregation and the benefit of the intergenerational church. I particularly agreed with the idea of the church being a "family", especially for those alone, or separated from family. I agree with the idea of eliminating age-based groups and encouraging interaction/groups irregardless of age.

Ideal resource for pastors and ministry directors!

Brandon J. O'Brien is editor-at-large for Leadership Journal and their poular blog, Out of Ur. He holds an MA in church history from Wheaton College and served as pastor of two small congregations. Bradon lives with his wife in the western suburbs of Cchicago, where he is a doctoral student in church history at Trinity Evangelical Divinity school.

Don't Kiss Him Good-bye (London Confidential series)

Reviewing books targeted to the young adult market encourages me. Especially when they are filled with themes that revolve around making good decisions.

Savvy Smith has been transplanted from the U.S. to London. In addition to trying to find her place in a new peer group, she is also overcoming cultural differences. The May Day Ball is a tradition at this British school. Everyone who is anyone goes to the dance and it seems to Savvy that everyone else has a date. Her list of prospective dates begins to dwindle. When she finally believes she has met someone, she is warned about his propensity to be trouble. Will she bypass her uneasy feelings and compromise? Is this the end of the world? Where does personal identity and self-worth come from? Can we find joy in life when it seems like nothing is working for us?

The written word has such a great opportunity to convey messages and this book is no different. I love Sandra Byrd and her sweet and refreshing humor as well as the details regarding fashion and pop culture. I didn't enjoy this third installment quite as much as the first two because I felt it was lighter on revealing the character's thought process and Savvy's thinking is so encompassed by "boy-craziness", although it is probably more accurate to real-life for many of today's teens.

The Waiting

Sometimes the simple life isn't all that simple. All women are self-conscious and want to believe we are wanted and beautiful.

It isn't any different for main character Jorie King in Suzanne Woods Fisher's new novel, The Waiting. She is waiting for Ben Zook to "find" himself, settle down and finally join the Faith. News that Ben Zook has been killed reaches home and the community has to find a way to move on with life. Jorie finds comfort in friendship with Caleb, Ben's brother whose wife has recently died. Until an unlikely thing happens.....

OR not so unlikely. I could see this "twist" coming from early on in the book. Even though I wasn't surprised, I did enjoy the book. It was a sweet tale of a timid girl that doesn't think she is beautiful or that anyone else could ever choose her either. Doesn't that girl reside in all of us? AND, you know my affinity for Amish fiction, especially when it doesn't involve a buggy accident as the plot climax.

The Healer's Apprentice - YA

Having a 12-year-old that is a voracious reader presents challenges. I want to know what she is reading, but I cannot read everything she reads, at least if I want to get anything else done. So I have to rely on authors that are reliable and recommendations of others. I was pleased to be "introduced" to to Melanie Dickerson and her first novel The Healer's Apprentice by a close friend.

I was told this book was a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale and so I started reading it with some preconceived notions. I wasn't sure that a tweak here and there to a fairy tale I knew well would keep my interest. Good thing this book was SO much more than just a tweak. I could not put it down! I read it all in one sitting! In the author interview she mentions what started her idea for this book. I loved the idea that she considered the prince and his sense of duty and responsibility, an idea that the author incorporates masterfully into her retelling. Worth a look for YA market AND older (like mid-30ish, like me!)

I can't wait to read more from this author in the future!

Love Finds You.....

in Victory Heights Washington!

WWII was an intense time. I wasn't around during the time period, but my grandmother has shared her experience. She was part of a high school class of four. Three boys and herself. When the boys quit high school to go to war, she decided to quit too and work in the factory. (She went back later and finished.) Her brothers fought in the war too.

My grandmother's story has always interested me. As I read this book, I pictured my grandmother in the factory working and doing her part to help in the war effort. It was emotional.

If you love WWII historical novels, this is the bittersweet tale of Rosalie and the loss of her fiance to war. She does her part for the war effort by working as a riveter in the local Boeing plant. She finds herself thrust into the limelight as Seattle's own "Rosie the Riveter" by an aspiring reporter. Will she allow herself to move on and open herself to love?

Tricia Goyer is the award-winning author of more than a dozen novels. She and her husband have four children and live in Arkansas. Oceanna Fleiss is a published author and editor. She lives with her husband and their four children in the Seattle area. This is the authors' second book together.

Beginning homeschooling fears

I start Monday homeschooling my seventh grade daughter. I am terrified! Of what? A pre-adolescent? Really? I had to deal with lots of those in my time....

No, that isn't it. I am terrified of screwing up my child. I am prepared, I think.... I started researching curriculum over a year ago. I went to the local conference and didn't miss a session. I interviewed other homeschooling moms. I researched public/private school options in our area. I checked into what the course of study was in the public schools. I bought curriculum (chasing down bargains). Most importantly, I prayed and I know this is God's best will for my child right now.

Am I qualified? I don't know. Am I up to the challenge? I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me!! That doesn't mean that fear isn't trying to seep in. It is a daily battle.

And honestly, I am a little selfish! Yep. I admitted it. While I look forward to spending time with her, I can't help but feel like I am cut off. I can't commit to a library storytime with my preschooler. I can't commit to a daytime bible study. I can't commit to a MOPS group. Feeling a little alone.....

But I KNOW that this is God's will and His will is always greater than we can ever imagine. I KNOW that I only have so much time left to impart great things to this child before she thinks I am an ignorant lunatic. I know that my ultimate responsibility is to be the parent God has called me to be. Being a mom is the best way to beat out our selfishness. It is always a sacrifice. This is just one more of those ways. It doesn't compare to the sacrifice that my Heavenly Father made for me.

Do me a favor? Just check in on me from time to time and help me to remember....

I was recently reading a book in which a character mentioned that anxiety is rooted in fear and that if you have complete faith in God, there is no fear. Anxiety is defined as distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune. Anxiety sets in if we try to control things ourselves and don't rely on God's provision. Guilty here more frequently than I'd like to admit.

A few years ago I was put on an anti-anxiety drug. A secondary usuage was for nerve pain, which I was diagnosed with. Later, the doctor told me he put me on the drugs because I seemed anxious during a visit. I was. I wonder what was his first clue? The woman crying the uncontrollable ugly cry? I don't know if the pain I was having was intensified by the anxiety or not. I wasn't on the drug long. I didn't like how it made me feel "foggy". Do I still struggle with anxiety? Yes. Absolutely. So I find studying these scriptures helps. I hope they help someone else tonight too.

Ps 27:1 - The Lord is my Light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, whom shall I fear?

Ps 34:4 I sought the Lord and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.

Ps 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength,

Too much

Sometimes I talk too much. I know this is surprising (NOT!). I have hurt some people and disappointed others with my words and thoughts lately. Yep, the thoughts too, because thoughts become words, and words become atttudes, and attitudes dictate actions. So, if you are one of these people, I'm sorry! I need to learn when to keep my mouth shut, and to think on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. (See Phillipians 4:8)

School Supplies

It's that time of the year again! School supply shopping! Everyone has a different approach. Personally, I try to salvage as much as possible from last years supplies with a couple of exceptions.

The kids always get a new box of markers, colored pencils and crayons. Nothing beats the new box of crayons with their perfectly sharpened tips and it's like buying happiness in a box for a quarter!

I also buy supplies in October (as they are clearancing out overstock) for next year. Folders, binders, lunchboxes, backpacks, ink pens, pencils, etc. all keep in storage well. The key is to remember where you store them!

My least favorite thing in shopping for supplies is going to multiple stores, but sometimes it can't be helped. Stores don't always stock everything. Like Art gum erasers! Wal-mart and Target take note!

I need to make a trip to Hobby Lobby to pick up the last few things for my homeschooler's enrichment day program, but for the most part, I am done.

On to the next task.....

Giving back (a lesson for me in gratitude)

It's so easy for me to get wrapped up in the daily life. Get up, make the coffee, get kiddos dressed, throw in the laundry (sometimes grumbling about how it never stops), yell at kids to do dishes, go to grocery store, etc. (You get the idea). Worrying about shallow things like who doesn't like me this week. Bad news all around us - unemployment rates, gas prices, grocery prices....

I've decided that I want to teach my children (and myself) that we are blessed beyond measure. That our "problems" could be much different and wider in scope. We have food to eat (good food too!), we have more than enough clothes to wear (though some of us may not be as stylish as we want!), we have a nice home with a nice bed to sleep in, we have clean water to drink.

When complaints arise about any of these things (from me as much as the children), I want to remember those who have less. Like the children in Africa. I don't say that as a guilt trip like moms that want their children to eat their brussels sprouts. I want to inspire gratefulness in my own heart as well as those of my children. I also want to live as those "to whom much is given, much is required." So I jumped at the opportunity to get involved with Kristen at We Are That Family and her Do it For Others Project for July. I volunteered as a seamstress to create dresses for Little Dresses for Africa out of pillowcases and supplies sent in by readers of the We Are That Family blog.

I created 10 dresses with the supplies I received with the help of my 12 year old and 10 year old daughters.

Here are some of our favorites.

This gave me an opportunity to dwell on how blessed I truly am and to thank God for His many blessings in my life. Gratitude is the key to a soft heart. Realizing what we have versus the ambition to always acquire more, new, better.....

It has also given me a door to discussion with my children. My 3 year old repeatedly asked when HER dresses would be finished and I was able to talk with her about how some of these children only have 1 dress and how thankful they will be to receive these.

I am resolved to continue to be an example of God's Love. AND to teach my children to do the same. It's the right thing to do.

Shades of Morning

Regrets. Do we all have them? Do we learn to move past them? Or gather them up and try to sweep them under the rug?

Marnie writes her regrets on slips of paper and slips them into a box. She ran from the life she once had and has created a new life. Bookstore/coffeeshop owner, a quiet and solitary life. Unexpectedly, Marnie is entrusted with the care of her sister's son, who has Down Syndrome. This development opens the door to her past. Her past love, mistakes and finally, healing.

Marlo Shalesky doesn't write this book with a typical storyline. I am not giving it away, either. While parts of the book may follow a typical plot, surprises are in store. It was a delightful and emotional read.

She Walks in Beauty

I know I rave about books, but this has to be one of my favorites in quite some time. This book was set in the late 1800s in New York City. Clara Carter is an innocent young girl in good societal circles. Her mother passed when she was young and she has been taught by a governess for several years. (For those of you who don't know, as I didn't, that means she was a debutant, attending balls and parties simply to find a suitable match. Clara has been told she doesn't have a choice. She "must" win the "heir" by any means necessary. Her best friend is her competition. Clara's innocence is robbed and her eyes opened during the process. She is introduced to a world where appearances are of the utmost importance and "truth" is inconvenient. Will she follow her heart or her family's wishes? Does she even have a choice? Is it true that God loves her just the way she is? Does anyone else?

Siri Mitchell's historical fiction is just phenomenal! Every time I read one, it makes me want to research more about the time period and situations presented. If you haven't read any of her work, be sure to check out The Constant Heart in addition to this one. She weaves a story so masterfully that is spellbinds this reader. I have the hardest time putting her books down to feed my family! Her characters are amazing. They come to life within the pages. She also has a tremendous ability to maneuver twists and turns that keep the reader enchanted and guessing until the end of the book. Bravo!!

Being comfortable in life sometimes causes people to be lazy. Desperation however can be a very powerful motivator. Elvira Kilmer is desperate. She has no hope of ever having a family of her own. She has to find work to keep from being on the streets and being destitute. She finds a widower, Jackson, who needs a housekeeper and someone to take care of his young sons. Elvira is plain. Jackson is handsome. Jackson also has a secret about his former wife. Will Elvira accept a most unusual arrangement? Will Jackson and Elvira find peace?

The book seems very formulaic. Girl is destitute. Man needs help. They meet. Make an arrangement.... blah, blah, blah.

I have to admit I wasn't impressed. It was a book. Something to read. I wish a better something. I read a quote somewhere last week (I wish I remember where) that said something to the effect of "When a scene becomes boring, make the characters fight over something..." The author of this book, Delia Parr seems to employ that strategy, and the characters fight a lot.

Not my favorite.

This book takes on an ambitiously large cast of characters. While several turn out to be minor, there are still five major women characters. Surprisingly, they are not really all that hard to keep separated. Each women has her story. Some are running from their past, some are desperate, some looking for a fresh start. Lives are changed, friendships found in unlikely places and romance discovered. It is a sweet and easily read novel. It was easy to pick up, but not a compelling page turner. It would make for a great summer beach read.

I have hesitated to write this review. Not because the book was bad, on the contrary, the book was VERY good. So good, in fact, I have been thinking about it for the last couple of weeks. So good that I have had some very interesting conversations with my husband. Abigail Caldwell, daughter of missionary parents, who has been isolated most of her life in the jungle is thrust into American society in 2088 after a tragedy in her village. In American society, Christianity has been virtually obliterated and people are addicted to Virtual Reality. Brain transplants are becoming a reality thanks to the leading artificial intelligence company. Abigail receives a disturbing message from her grandparents that place the fate of the world in her hands. There are others that want Abigail to disappear and keep quiet.

The book poses interesting situations and rousing questions. What if Christians keep quiet and let society tell us that we have no voice? Will Christianity be relegated to "antiquated" ideas and the "religion of the un-educated"? Will technology, without inventors and users with morals, become corrupt and steal the essence of our humanity?

If you want a laid back read, this ISN't it. If you want a fast-paced, futuristic, make-you-think read, pick this one up!

Homeschooling for the Rest of Us

I am planning on homeschooling my daughter in the fall. She will be in 7th grade. I am intimidated by the whole idea. I'm afraid I don't know enough. I'm afraid I won't pick the right curriculum. I'm afraid I won't be able to give her what she needs and keep up with everything else I have to do. That is why I snatched up the chance to read and review Homeschooling for the Rest of Us by Sonya Haskins.

I feel like I need all the help I can get. It was a reassuring book. Overall, I walked away with a good impression. I feel like it helped me to be more confident in my decision. It has practical advice on socialization, coops, attitudes and relationships. Even if you are not a homeschooler, there is useful information in this book! Tips on dealing with relatives and their opinions on your decisions, tips on chores for children, streamlining your household, tips on on trimming and staying on budget, tips on nurturing your child's heart, take your pick! All are useful for any parent, even if you are not homeschooling. While the book was good, I did have a hard time getting through the first couple of chapters, so if you do read it, stick with it.

I haven't posted much besides book reviews lately. For a few reasons, none of which are important to mention.

Anyway, I believe I need to share this. I went to a women's retreat a couple of weeks ago and felt "whapped" upside the head. It was not a gentle correction people! Let me share what I read and where God led me -

I was reading my Bible during a prayer time and stopped short when I read James 1:5-8 (NLT) - If you need wisdom, ask our generous God and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. BUT, when you ask Him be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive ANYTHING from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in EVERYTHING they do. (emphasis added is mine)

I know some people balk when people mention "checks in their Spirit", but I can't describe it any other way. God wanted me to read this, and not just read it but meditate on it, examine my heart, my motivations, my life.

I wrote down these verses and have been carrying them with me for the last two weeks, pulling them out and reading them as a reminder of where my loyalty needs to be and where my faith needs to rest. I also wrote out this prayer.

Help me Lord to remember that YOU alone are my source. Not friends, not my husband, not my church, YOU! Generous God, give me wisdom. Thank you that I can ask you for it without your scorn or rebuke. Help me to stand firm without wavering and to give You and Your Word full loyalty so that I may avoid being an unsettled wave, but that I will be a peaceful ocean that runs deep in Your Word. I want to be stable in what I do. I want my loyalty to lie in You. I don't want to be divided. My strentgh comes from You and wholeness You offer. Thank you and AMEN!

I don't share this lightly and I don't share it for any purpose except that I know others may be struggling with divided loyalty and drawing from sources other than God! Don't go down that road! It dead-ends with heartache, bitterness and remorse! Take God's path of wisdom, prosperity and PEACE!

Beguiled

If I haven't mentioned it, my favorite reading genre is historical fiction. (Yes I know you probably know that by now.) But there was a time that mystery/suspense was my "go to". So I still enjoy a good mystery now and then. Beguiled by Deeanee Gist and J Mark Bertrand was the first suspense novel I read in a while.

Rylee Monroe is a dogwalker whose clients become victims of a unique robbery ring. Rylee is suspected by the police. Reporter Logan Woods is writing a novel and trying to get to the heart of the robbery ring to wrap up his book. Will he uncover the truth and rescue Rylee's reputation? Is Rylee in danger? Can Logan keep his objectivity?

I love Deanne Gist's other books. This book was okay. I like suspense novels to be difficult to predict and hard to put down. This one didn't fit the bill in either account for me. I knew early on who the "villain" was and where the book was headed. It wasn't a page-turner and the characters were forgettable. All the talk of Charleston's streets and layouts were meaningless to anyone who hasn't been there.

Spend your time on something else.

The Rewards of Simplicity

What mom doesn't dream of simplifying? Reducing to the common denominator to slow things down. Simplifying means less stuff to take care of, right?

True, but The Rewards of Simpliciy by Pam & Chuck Pierce argues that while simplifying clutter and schedules are important, the value of simplification lays also in our spiritual lives. Putting into practice faith, focus and function to clarify God's purpose and calling in our lives, and putting legs to it! While the book holds a lot of interesting ideas, the writing is mediocre. I struggled through all the personal examples that made it seem like a biography. There were a couple of places where I disagreed with some theology issues too.

So, common denominator, simplificated (is that a word?) review - Not worth your time. There are better books out there that say the same things.

Chuck serves as president of Glory of Zion International Ministries in Denton, TX and watchman of Global Harvest Ministries in Colorado Springs, CO. Scenarios series for Girls books 3-4

I'm tired of superficial books. Books that have no real value. My husband always says that fiction is worthless. I disagree. GOOD fiction still can change hearts and minds. GOOD fiction can still spark the imagination and serve as amazing conversation starters. I have children who love to read and I am very excited when I find an author and a group of books that are interesting and can be used to help train children.

Nicole O'Dell is one of those authors. Her Scenarios series for tween girls deals with hefty issues and give readers the opportunity to make decisions and see possible outcomes based on their decisions. If you have a tween ages 11-13 or so, these are books for you. I believe with the subject matter that 11 is probably the youngest I would let my daughters read these.

I read these books and then had my 11 year old daughter read them as well. We were able to use them to have some serious discussions. Discussions on subjects that some parents may find difficult to bring up with their children.

I decided to share my daughter's synopses and opinions on the book here for you.

Magna, Book 3 - Scenarios series

Molly, Sara and Jess want jobs at the ultimate girls clothing store more than anything, but only Molly gets the job. Then Sara and Jess need Prom dresses, but don't have the money. That's when they figure thay and "borrow" dresses from Molly's employer.

Will Molly help her friends or report them? The choice is yours to make.

I like this book because Molly acted like girls do today and it seemed very realistic. I like being able to decide what ending the book has.

and Making Waves, Book 4

Kate loves to swim and decides to join the swim team for her sophomore year. She is practicing all the time. She realizes that it can be tiring and soon finds herself using energy drinks. At the championship she "needs" more. She is offered illegal drugs to imporve her swimming. What will she do? What would you do?

I liked this book because Kathe is faced with many situations girls face today. It showed consequences could be of taking drugs.

Q & A with Nicole O’Dell

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself?
A: I have six kids ranging in age from 18 all way down to my toddler triplets. I work from home with all of my kiddos underfoot, which presents challenges of its own but has also been a huge blessing. I’m also a returning college student and the youth leader at my church.

Q: What has drawn you to writing for the YA market?
A: Fear! Seriously.

When I was a young girl, my mom was my hero. I really believed that she could do anything and that she knew everything. Somehow, when I entered my early teen years, that all changed. I became angry and really gave her a hard time. I regret much of those years now that I see the truth of them. My mom is now my very best friend. I wish I had known then what I know now and had some kind of grasp on just how temporary all of that angst and confusion really was.

Ever since I had my daughters, I have feared those years. My parenting has really been shaped by my desire to avoid as much of that destruction as possible. My heart’s desire is to reach hormonal, confused, pre-teen girls, and to protect them from themselves, and their families from the confusion that can ensue as the girls face those life changes.

Q: Tell us a little about your novels...
A: In the Scenarios series, each main character is faced with many choices and moral dilemmas. Eventually, they find that their choices have led them into a situation that requires them to make a very difficult and potentially life-altering moral decision. When the story has fully unfolded, and the main character arrives at that moment of truth, the reader makes the big decision for her and then turns to the corresponding section in the book where the resulting circumstances unfold.

This format places the responsibility for those decisions squarely on the reader’s shoulders, in hopes that she will learn from her personal experience as she lives it through the eyes of the book's character. She will learn the importance of good decisions as well as the truth about forgiveness and grace. Even when poor choices are made, the redemptive power of Christ is evident as forgiveness is sought, offered and received.

Nicole O’Dell and her husband Wil have six wonderful children, the most recent additions being triplets, born in August 2008. Nicole and Wil recently began a youth group at their church for grades 7-12 where Nicole focuses on the teaching, Bible study application, service outreach planning and evangelism aspects of the group. This Little Prayer of Mine (Review and Giveaway)

I love picture books. Three of my children are very independent readers now and while they like to be read to, they want a chapter book with characters and plots. But I love cuddling my youngest and reading picture books to her. She will bring books to anyone that she thinks might read to her. She carries books around in her "purse". So of course I jumped at the chance to read and review This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano (and illustrated by Mark Elliott).

First, I love that the book promotes prayer in children. Teaching children that their concerns, cares and even their gratitude needs to be taken to their Heavenly Father on a regular basis is very important. Think of the heartaches that can be later avoided in life if we depend on Him instead of earthly people. (I learn the hard way...) It also encourages children to be confident in God hearing them when they pray.

I wasn't crazy about the illustrations. The muted colorscheme didn't thrill me, sometimes perspective seems skewed and two-dimensional, but on other pages very life-like and 3-D. I think it all just seemed inconsistent.....

Still, a nice book to have in a collection. The books is endorsed by The National Day of Prayer.

London Confidential Series Review

If you haven't been reading my blog for a while, then you don't know that I have an 11 year-old daughter that loves to read (like her mother). I remember when she was younger, I convinced myself that I would read everything that she read. Yeah, right. (make sure you read that with sarcasm). It is NOT possible. But, there are some things that I know I don't want her to read. Things that I wouldn't even read myself. I am so glad that there are some edifying things like the London Confidential series out there that are geared to her age group. I have read other adult novels by Sandra Byrd. She inserts humor and writes her characters with depths of feeling that are scarily similar to feelings I have experienced. I didn't expect any different from her new London Confidential Series for Young Adults.

Her protagonist is Savvy Smith, 15 years old, transplanted to London with her family. Savvy has to deal with culture shock, adaptation and finding her place in her new school. Asking for Trouble and Through Thick and Thin are the first two books in the series. In both books, Savvy is presented with choices to make and the consequences (good and bad) for the decisions she made. Byrd does a great job having her character pray for wisdom and consult scripture. AND, the character isn't perfect. She makes mistakes too, just as we all do. We can do this in person, or we can do it by buying a good book to pass along to our daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and friends.

What can readers look forward to in the final two London Confidential books?

The final two books in the series release on September 1, 2010 and talk about good friendships and bad, why it's important for Christian girls to stick with only liking, even crushing on, Christian boys, how to persevere in times of trouble, and taking your first adult steps in your faith. Lisa Wingate hits a home-run with another novel set in Daily, Texas. Never Say Never is about a hurricane evacuation that throws together some quirky characters.

The juxtaposition of the southern drawls and the creole/cajun accents is wonderful! Kai Miller does not have roots and doesn't mind, until she meets the trio of unlikely friends from Daily that take her under their wing during the evacuation. She is drawn to them, AND to a certain nephew. It is not only a story of new romance, but also a tale of rediscovery for disillusioned hairstylist Donetta Bradford. Rediscovery of her background and family history. I won't spoil it, but Donetta also has some surprises headed her way!

Wingate writes with humor and compassion and alternates between points of view of Donetta and Kai throughout the book. The writing of their corresponding chapters fits their characters so well, I could almost hear their voices. The storyline was unique and entertaining.

It takes a lot of courage to try and change your life if you see no way out. Not a Sparrow Falls by Linda Nichols focuses on Mary Bridget, who has made some bad choices and is living with the consequences. She believes that God does not see her. So many people think this at some time in their lives. Mary Bridget finds an opportunity to escape and begin a new life. But the past won't stay in the past. Will it change her new relationships? Is there such a thing as unconditional love? Can she be an instrument of healing someone else's life?

There were a few places in the novel that I felt lost and couldn't place why a particular event or scene was included, but Nichols ties it all together in the end with a somewhat predictable and sweet ending. Definitely a book with themes of redemption, forgiveness and grace, both in the eyes of our Heavenly Father and fellow men.

An Absence So Great (Review and Giveaway)

Jane Kirkpatrick's novel, An Absence So Great, is the sequel to A Flickering Light. Both are based on the life of Kirkpatrick's grandmother. Jessie is a young woman in the early 1900s working as a photographer's assistant who dreams of owning her own studio someday. She has left home to try and escape the attraction that she feels toward her married employer. The novel chronicles Jessie's growth professionally and spiritually.

I love that this is based on a true story, even though it is somewhat fictionalized. I also love that some of the actual photos taken by Jessie are included. Some parts of the book are written in first person, as journal entries. It was unclear as to whether or not these were actual entries or fiction.

Kirkpatrick's writing is skillful and heartfelt. Characters are developed in a way that makes them very real. Both novels are epics. Sweeping in scope and well written. Written to capture visual cues and emotions, these novels are extraordinary. BUT, you must read them in order. Reading An Absence so Great first will pretty much void the predecessor (A Flickering Light).

In the church lobby the other day, my dear two year old heard the worship team practicing and she stopped what she was doing and began dancing. She didn't worry about a schedule, where she needed to be, who was watching or who was judging her actions. The beautiful image it presented made my heart flutter. If only I could express the same joy! Often, I get too discouraged by my circumstances and agendas to just drop everything and express the gift of joy bestowed on me through Christ!

Dancing with My Father by Sally Clarkson uses biblical references and insights as well as examples from the author's life to reveal what life can be like if we trust our God. Listening to His voice, searching for Him around us, examining our hearts for wrong attitudes, and protect our hearts from "joy robbers" and deception. But it is much more as well. It is a comfort to the hurting, telling them there is hope and joy isn't based on your circumstances. It is all about relationship. Relationship with God. The book is well written and inspiring.

Questions at the end of each chapter offer an opportunity to use the book for personal or group study.

I have never been on an international missions trip. I have never been out of the cushy comfort zone of the USA. By USA standards, I wasn't born into wealth, but by the standards of the Third World, I was rich. I have never had to send my children to bed hungry or worry about how to clothe them.

Beaded Hope by Cathy Liggett teams together a group of women from the U.S. facing varying issues in their personal lives. These women embark on a missions trip to South Africa. Their reasons for going are anything but altruistic, but what they encounter changes them all forever.

If you like being complacent and selfish, this isn't the book for you. If you want to be thankful for what you have, where you live and be challenged to think about someone besides yourself, then this book is a MUST read. The book is well-written, easy to read, compelling and heart-breaking.

The novel was inspired by the nonprofit organization Beaded Hope. Their mission is to fight HIV/AIDS one person at a time by providing South Africans with the opportunity to earn an income, support their families and nurture their creativity while preserving age-old African beadwork traditions.
A portion of proceeds from the sale of the novel support the organization.

Cathy Liggett is the author of several contemporary romances and one nonfiction book. She was inspired to write Beaded Hope after traveling to South Africa on a mission trip like the one described in the story.

Revolve 2010 review

Heard of a Biblezine?

I had not heard of them until I received a copy of the Revolve 2010 Biblezine. It is the Complete New Testament in the NCV version in a magazine format geared specifically to teens. The colorful formats and designs would appeal to pre-teens and teens alike. Some subject matter including purity make me tend to think this is better directed at the early high school years. Side articles include advice columns on relationships and style. There are profiles for biblical characters in a "goodbook" format to mimic facebook. To an adult some content could be seen as "cheesy". I am all for ways to get the Word to teens and this seems like a new and innovative way. I think I would have loved a resource like this as a teenager and I imagine my girls will love it too (in a couple of years.)

Since 2005, more than 215,000 girls have attended a Revolve Tour event. For 2008-2009, the Tour has expanded to 16 cities and expects to reach 150,000 girls this year alone.

I was recently speaking with a friend and we talked about how family relationships can often be the ones that hurt the most. But restoration of those relationships is possible and it all starts with trying to understand each other.

I received Secrets by Robin Jones Gunn and Faithful Heart by Al Lacy for review.

I love Jones Gunn's Sisterchicks series and was anticipating the arrival of Secrets. I have to admit I was disappointed. It was a quick and easy read, but predictable and not compelling. I like a light-hearted fiction book that doesn't require a lot of thinking now and again. It wasn't painful to read, just forgettable.

I have also read some of Lacy's writing and particularly like the Mail Order Bride series. Faithful Heart is Book Two of the Angel of Mercy Series which is a spin-off of The Stranger series. The book opens with the author giving the reader a back story on the main characters. That was a turn-off to me. Even though I like reading series books, I don't like feeling like I HAVE to read another book to feel like I can understand the book currently in my hand. I have read a couple of the Stranger series.

The main story line of Faithful Heart deals with Shell Shock of a soldier after the Civil War and the wife that stands by him during the ordeal. She is faithful to her wedding vows and truly loves her husband. Extremely admirable traits, and I truly cared about her and her plight. This book also continues a romance between two characters introduced in the Stranger series. How many times can you bring a couple extremely close to being together to only allow circumstances to pull them apart again? I can't handle it on t.v. sitcoms and I don't like it in my books. Give us a resolution already! I almost feel like it is purposely crafted to get to the next book, and the next, and the next.....

The Hidden Flame

I get in a rut sometimes when it comes to reading my Bible. What I mean is that I read it and read it and read it and don't put a lot of thought behind events happening in the culture at the time.

The Acts of Faith series by Davis Bunn and Janette Oke fictionalize events surrounding the ministry of Christ and the early church. The first book in the series, The Centurion's Wife was wonderful. I picked it up at the library on a whim last year and I was hooked from the beginning.

The Hidden Flame is the second in the series. It is not dependent on the first book although a few of the characters are the same. The Hidden Flame follows the followers of the Way during the early church immediately following the crucifixtion of Christ.

Abigail is being sought after by two suitors, a merchant in high standing and a Roman soldier, but she wants neither of them. Her heart is drawn to another. The book was compelling and entertaining fiction, but also made me consider persecution. I take my faith for granted. I wonder if faced with the persecution of the early church, if I would stand firm. These people were dedicated.

Davis Bunn has written a number of gift books and novels, including The Great Divide.
Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series has been the source for several Hallmark films.

Why raise modest children?

When I type that I realize that you may think that I mean children that are not prideful or vain, and while that is certainly important, what I truly mean is children who have a regard for decency of behavior, speech, dress, etc (as defined by dictionary.com).

Why mention this now? Because I went shopping at the mall tonight with my two oldest daughters who are 11 and 9. Because all they wanted to look at buying were the trendy mini-skirts, the spaghetti strap camis and plunging necklines. "ooh, isn't this cute, BUT dad would never let me wear it." After the second or third time hearing this I had to ask my dear daughters, "Do you know why?". The eldest responded, "because it shows too much skin." ME - "Why is that a bad thing?" Then, utter silence....and if you have daughters, you know utter silence doesn't happen very often (at least in my experience so far.)

This conversation was a great teachable moment. I proceeded to tell them about how you can dress in a stylish and tasteful way without bearing so much skin. I imparted to them the fact that boys and men are visual and that exposing too much skin is temptation and that they want boys and men to be attracted to them for more than their looks.

It was a great conversation that ended with a great laugh when my 9 year old piped up and said, "I'm never marrying a professional wrestler." I had to chuckle and ask why. Her response, "because they show A LOT of skin and if it's not right for girls, it's not right for guys either." Methinks this conversation may need to be revisited in a few years....

So Long Insecurity

This isn't a book review. More a passing on of info. I have heard for years about Beth Moore, knew who she was, heard how fabulous her books and studies are, but I haven't read any. Last week I started her newest book, So Long Insecurity (you've been a bad friend to us). I've gotten thru chapter 2.

I knew before I started that I had security issues, but I told myself, "I'm not THAT bad." I was in tears by the end of Chapter 2. From the definition of insecurity and indications of insecurity that were mentioned, I AM more insecure than I thought.

I am pledging now to take the journey in reading this book to becoming a SECURE woman of God. A woman secure in who she is and who God created her (me) to be. A woman who doesn't draw her security from others.

Plain Pursuit review

I won't mention YET AGAIN how much I love GOOD Amish Fiction. Not just a plot thrown together with the token buggy accident. Beth Wiseman delivers with Plain Pursuit.

Carley is an Englischer outsider who has suffered great loss. She is forced to take a vacation to re-focus and get her life in order. Looking for peace, she uses the time to visit her friend Lillian in the Plain Community. Lillian's son becomes sick during her visit and she doesn't understand why the doctor who wants to help is not allowed to treat the child. Carley learns about the Amish, and also discovers her own distrust in God. Will she find her way to reconciliation? What is authentic and can she trust her heart?

Wiseman develops her characters so that readers truly care about their circumstances. I was invested in finding out how it all resolved! Once I started reading, I couldn't stop!

Beth Wiseman's first novel was best-selling Plain Perfect. (My next read, hopefully!) Beth and her family live in Texas.

This book was fabulous!

Lynn Austin ties together multiple generations and their struggles with slavery, prohibition, and women's suffrage. Don't let the idea of those heavy subjects scare you away. It was tastefully done and thought provoking. It made me consider how the choices of past generations can make ripples for ancestors. If you knew your grandparent were instrumental in prohibition, would it change your choices? Would it create pressure on you? What about regret? Is there ever regret associated with activism?

Lynn Austin weaves beautiful writing with compelling themes. Definitely a book to add to your must read list!

I only spent about 5 years in "workplace america" before I started staying home to raise my growing family, and I worked in a predominantly female office structure for half that time. The office atmosphere changed when the company was bought out and restructured and there was an influx of new male employees.

At the time I really didn't give much credence to the simple fact that the atmosphere changed because of the difference in men's and women's views of the workplace.

Reading Shaunti Feldhahn's book, The Male Factor, shed a lot of light for me on differences in men and women's viewpoints on the workplace and how men view women and their actions. I appreciate the time and effort that she put into research, polls and personal interviews of men in the workplace across all types of companies, from the small business to the conglomerates. The book is NOT a male-bashing tool and isn't a book trying to shame women into being something they are not, it is simply stating the way the workplace is viewed by men and women differently.

I learned a lot about how men expect confidence, expect coworkers to go the extra mile, and equate complaining to a victim mentality that undermines their perception of the person's confidence level. I know the old adage about "statistics never lie, but liars use statistics"....but I also think that in well-structured studies (which it appears were used in writing this book), statistics are a good meter of public opinion.

If you are in a workplace, or have been, or hope to be someday, this book is a good resource to shed light on the difference between men and women and their attitudes toward work and each other.

Shaunti Feldhahn is a nationally syndicated columnist and the bestselling author of For Women Only: What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men and For Men Only, which together sold one million copies. Before you all groan about another diet book and another fad, reserve your judgment on this one, okay?. While so many "diet" books I have read in the past may have me inspired for a while (we did South Beach for 4-5 months last year), I believe that lifestyle changes are much more important than "diets".

This book IS NOT a ONE Day diet fad. Let's just get that out of the way now, because you may from the title be misled that this is a fad book. You may think - "I'm all for easy and doing it in a day!" I have news for you, becoming healthy has nothing to do with easy! Bringing that kind of thinking to ANY book about a lifestyle change is going to lead to failure.

The One-Day Way by Chantel Hobbs IS about transforming your thinking. It IS about removing old and unhealthy practices from your life. It IS about being your best every day. It isn't about being pathetic. It IS about taking control and being worth every minute of it!

What is your biggest challenge to being healthy or losing weight? One of mine is guilt and regret when I don't have what I perceive to be enough "willpower" and in turn, I have a "setback". Thankful Thursday

I have been a great big grump this afternoon. Grumpy because we missed Christmas festivities with family because of snow and my son had the flu. Grumpier because hubby is now sick for New Years. It is repetition for us from last year. We all had a stomach virus at Christmas last year and hubs was really sick with Bronchitis at New Years.

I am tired of sickness.

BUT, this post isn't about my disappointment, nor my cabin fever and my need to be out by myself without kiddos. This post IS about being thankful. Gratitude changes everything. Instead of being grumpy, I want to be happy. I control MY emotions.

I AM thankful that my family is healthy. Yes, we have our rounds of flu, our sniffles and coughs, but no major illnesses. No drawn out hospital stays. No diagnoses that change our lives forever. No struggling to pay hospital bills.

So, while I may be a little inconvenienced at this moment, I thank God that I have the family that I have, and that all I have to worry about is whether or not I have enough kleenex.......

A Measure of Mercy

A lot of people struggle with knowing God's plan for their life. So many people just wait and wait and never feel like they know their purpose. I think that is why Lauraine Snelling's book, A Measure of Mercy, will hit a chord with readers. Main character, Astrid Bjorklund, is torn between her desire to study medicine and returning to her hometown of Blessing and her newfound interest in Joshua Landsverk. Conflicted and confused, Astrid hears a missionary speak at her church of medical needs in Africa. What is God's will for her life? Can she determine His plan and choose to follow? Will the love between her and Joshua continue to grow?

The book is well written and I truly felt the conflict and anguish of the heroine, Astrid. She is a likable character and I was rooting for her throughout the book. This is book one of the Home to Blessing series, so be warned that the book is a set-up for at least one sequel.

The author writes in a way that I feel like I have missed something about the characters. Maybe a significant event in their lives previously or maybe they are characters from another series, I wasn't sure since this was the first novel I read by Snelling. Or maybe she just leaves some things to the imagination of the reader, and for that I can't fault her for giving her readers opportunities to exercise their imaginations.

Overall, a great read! I will be reading more of Snelling's books.

Wow! Time does fly! My children are growing up in the blink of an eye!

Seven years ago today I was awaiting my son's entry into this world. I thought I had this parenting thing figured out! I had adorable 4 and 2 year old girls and I thought "How different can parenting a boy really be?" (All you moms of boys can now take a break for hysterical laughter.)

How wrong I was. This little guy had a different attitude from the beginning. (Not wrong, just different than I was used to.) He was loud (and still is). Things that seemed very unfunny to me sent him into hysterical laughter (yes, bodily functions included.) His need for rough-housing and super-hero antics also baffled me.

What a wonderful dimension he added to our family! Yes, he is loud and boisterous at times, but that means he is enthusiastic about life. His laughter and jokes help lighten the mood and bring joy to the house. His mechanical abilities (translated : his ability to take everything apart to see how it works) make for great springboards to discussion. Even his super-hero antics make me proud. Proud that he wants to be the knight in shining armor someday for the girl of his dreams. (okay maybe not the girl part yet, he still thinks they have cooties).

He reminds me of his Dad in so many ways. He is slow to anger, gentle and kind. He likes to tease his sisters and mom, but also fiercely protective if anyone else hurts them! He is a great big brother, too!

We know God has great plans for you and your life!

People pleasing versus God pleasing

I have been dealing with this a LOT lately. So I thought I should share this Joyce Meyer devotional that I've been reading...

Our pastor made a comment this last weekend that also stuck with me. Being in God's will doesn't mean that we won't have difficulty. That isn't the way to determine whether or not we are in His will for our lives.

Sometimes, I believe we face MORE adversity when we are in God's will. We do have an enemy that doesn't want us there. An enemy who will do anything, use anything, to discourage us and keep us from walking in God's will for our life.

I remember as a little girl being very nosy. (I often wonder now if my parents found it as annoying as I do now with my own 9 year old). I tried to listen in on conversations between the adults in the house, but I especially liked to pick through my grandmother's jewelry box and cedar chest. I loved to find the random item that seemed unusual and out of place. Anytime I started to think Grandma had lost it, she told me the story of why she had kept it. Reasons that were completely valid. There was some significance attached to the item in her memories.

Leigh McLeroy's book, Treasured Knowing God by the Things He Keeps, examines the significance of items mentioned in His Word and what they reveal about His nature. Some of the items examined in the book include a dry waterskin, Abraham's knife, a smooth stone and a scarlet thread. McLeroy applies her own personal experiences and feelings to each examination. She is perfectly transparent and lays her most intimate emotions and experiences out for scrutiny. It is very thought provoking.

The transitions from personal experience to the application to God's Word are fairly abrupt. Looking past that, McLeroy provides interesting material that could serve as a conversation starter. The discussion guide provided would work well for a small bible study or personal reflection.

God Gave Us...... (Reviews)

This time of year can be meaningful as a time of remembrance of God's love for us. But, the message and the meaning can also get lost in the commercialism and materialism that surrounds the holiday too. I am constantly looking for resources to reinforce the importance of the true meaning of Christmas.

Lisa Tawn Bergren's book, God Gave Us Christmas is an excellent book designed to reinforce the fact that GOD gave us Christmas because of His love for us.

I was at a mom's group yesterday evening where many moms discussed Santa Claus and how their family handled Santa. I loved the quote in this book where mama bear tells her cub, "Santa Claus reminds us about many good things like generosity and care. But it is God and Jesus that we celebrate most come Christmas. We always want to thank God for giving us Christmas."

The illustrations are captivating and beautiful. This book is a treasure that I hope to keep and read as a holiday tradition for a long time!

I also had an opportunity to review God Gave Us Love by the same author.

While this book doesn't mention Christmas specifically, it does teach that love comes from God and God gives us love to give to others, which is certainly appropriate during the holiday season. It also tenderly explains that love is a choice and not always a feeling. The use of a patient Grandpa bear to explain these concepts to the cub is truly endearing.

Do you ever look at the life of someone else and think, "Wow, they have it all together! Their house is beautiful, they are healthy, they have adorable and well-behaved children. Life for them is so easy!" You know you do! I do. But we also know appearances are deceiving. It is like seeing two pixels of an entire computer screen, or even better, do you know those pictures that are made up of thousands of other smaller pictures? It is like looking at one tiny panel of one of those.

Susan Meissner's White Picket Fences is about a family that appears to have it all. Wonderful careers, great kids, and a perfect life. Amanda Janvier agrees to have her niece, Tally, stay with the family when her father disappears. Tally and Amanda's teenage son, Chase, work together on a school project about the Holocaust. Chase becomes troubled. This project unlocks secrets that have been carefully hidden in his family. But secrets always have a way of coming to the surface. Can this family survive the turmoil and stick together?

Meissner's characters are very developed and believable. About halfway through the book I couldn't put it down. I tend to avoid Holocaust books, because of the heavy subject matter. This book deals with it thoughtfully and tastefully. Facades and secrecy aren't glorified. The importance of relationships and communication come through. A very interesting read!

Susan Meissner cannot remember a time when she wasn’t driven to put her thoughts down on paper. Her novel The Shape of Mercy was a Publishers Weekly pick for best religious fiction of 2008 and a Christian Book Award finalist. I always enjoy reading fiction that makes me think about my life and things close to my heart. Currently, that involves parenting. (Big surprise with four kids, I know!)

One of the dilemmas of parenting is walking the fine line between protecting your child and making them take responsibility for their actions and the consequences that stem from their actions.

Leaving Yesterday by Kathryn Cushman follows Alisa Stewart. A mom and Christian who says and does all the right things. She leads the women's ministry at her church. She leads grief seminars to help others find healing, but she feels like her life is falling apart. One child was murdered for sharing his faith. One has become the prodigal. Her marriage is in trouble. When it looks like the prodigal has changed his ways, a police officer starts asking questions about an unsolved murder. Was her son involved? Alisa is torn. Her son has changed, he is a new creation, doesn't he deserve to move on with his life? But if he was involved, should he face the consequences of his actions? Is it her responsibility to make sure the truth comes to light?

This is the first book I have read written by Kathryn Cushman. I really enjoyed her writing. It is easy to read. Actually, I was hooked. I kept wondering, if I was in that situation, what I would do. I would like to say I would help my child face reality and consequences, but without actually being in that situation, I'm not sure I could accurately guess my actions....

It was a page turner. Alisa's internal struggle and ultimately dealing with the consequences of her own decisions was captivating!

Kathryn Cushman is a graduate of Samford University with a degree in pharmacy. Her two previous novels were A Promise to Remember and Waiting for Daybreak, a finalist in Women's Fiction for the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award. Kathryn and her family currently live in Santa Barbara, CA.

The second half is titled "Wishful Thinking", and subtitled "(probably won't happen)". This will have you laughing. I'll refrain from commentary on it...

The Well-Behaved Child review

I have been a parent for 11 years. I have read A LOT of parenting books. Within the last few years I've grown disenchanted because they all started to blend together and sound the same. I admit I wasn't sure about this book when I first heard of it. BUT - after I started reading, I was captivated! John Rosemond writes in a practical tone and to the heart of every parent. Using specific examples, practical techniques and frequent questions drawn from his years of Family Psychology and personal experience as a parent, Rosemond addresses techniques and parental attitudes toward discipline. He writes as if in the room with you, chatting over a cup of coffee. My favorite part of reading this book was the realization that ALL kids misbehave. We so frequently feel like failures as parents because our children misbehave. Children are born with a sinful nature, just like the rest of us. The Secret of Indigo Moon review

We have all heard that "a picture is worth a thousand words." I suppose that might be why manga art comics have become so popular. The Secret of Indigo Moon from The Doppleganger Chronicles by G.P. Taylor combines manga comics and novel in an interesting read for young adults. It is a good combination of the two that can encourage belligerent readers.

The book follows the escapades of three youngsters who are labeled as troublemakers and seem to be in the right place at the right time to be unlikely heroes. The illustrations are well drawn. The plot is easy to follow and somewhat interesting. This book is the second in a series and frequently mentions events that happened in the first book. Since I didn't read the first, it was a tad frustrating. If you have a young adult that is interested in the genre, it is worth checking these out!

A motorcyclist and former rock band roadie turned Anglican minister, Graham Peter (G. P.) Taylor has been hailed as "hotter than Potter" and "the new C. S. Lewis" in the United Kingdom. I know that I have mentioned before my fascination with Amish novels. So it should be no surprise that Cindy Woodsmall's new novella, The Sound of Sleigh Bells, had me riveted! I am glad it was a novella, or I would have been up all night!

Beth Hertzler has been emotionally wounded by a horrible tragedy and her family is worried. Beth occupies herself with her work, actually, she hides behind her work. Beth's Aunt Lizzy notices a change for the better in Beth and seeks out the source of the change. Will her aunt's attempts at drawing Beth out work? Will Beth resent the very person who could provide her a second chance at love?

If you are at all interested in Amish fiction I have to recommend Woodsmall's books. They are riveting and filled with characters that are so dimensional that readers will find themselves crying for and cheering on the characters as if they were real people.

You Were Born For This!

Over the last few months I have heard several people mention their frustration with their life "calling". What I have mainly heard is something along the lines of "There has to be more...." More what? More to dream? More to accomplish? More to keep us occupied?

For me, it is more peoples lives to touch. I have always known that I was given a gift of compassion by my Creator. At times it makes life hard. I hurt for others, not to mention being wounded easily, whether the wounds were intentional or not, but I stray off subject....

God has more for each of us. What does he call us to besides utilizing our gifts and talents? Besides the Great Commission? Besides loving Him with all our hearts, minds and souls? How about becoming a miracle delivery agent?!!! You heard me right!

Wouldn't it be wonderful to point others to God by helping them experience His love firsthand?

I was so excited to read Bruce Wilkinson's newest book, You Were Born for This, 7 Keys to a Life of Predictable Miracles.

This book can help shift your mindset to make you expect divine appointments, to ask for them, to recognize God's "nudge", and to direct the credit back to Him. One of the most significant things that I have had to deal with is fear. Wilkinson points out that fear can actually be confirmation that we are doing the right thing and we need to overcome our fear with faith.

My only concern with the book is that it all seems a little formulaic. An all-powerful God doesn't need "Step one" to follow "Step two", etc. to prove Himself mighty. But don't get me wrong, this book is full of great keys and freeing concepts.

One of the world’s foremost Christian teachers, Bruce Wilkinson is best known as the author of the New York Times #1 bestseller The Prayer of Jabez. Much too busy...

A lot of our 'busyness' is a way for us to avoid thinking about what is most important. There's a difference between being busy and being productive. ~ Kristen Lippincott

Busy, Busy, Busy. Every night of the week. Monday - soccer, Tuesday - football, Wednesday - church, Thursday - soccer, Friday - football, Saturday - soccer x2. Not to mention bible studies, choir practices, laundry, grocery shopping, supervising homework, cooking....whew! I'm tired just writing it all down. And that's not all of it either. I know some of not being defeated by all the "busyness" is attitude, and trusting God to show me the "best" and not just the "good". What's the difference between the two? Read this devotional from Joyce Meyer.

I once heard a speaker (I think it was probably Joyce) that talked about how we often wear our "busyness" as a badge. "Look how busy I am!" "I'm important because I'm busy."

The truth is that "busyness" as Martha showed us in Luke 10:38-42, can often be a huge distraction. A distraction to the point that we can't see past it to what is truly important. Not that we have to become hermits and live in caves and divorce ourselves from every activity and ministry that we are involved in, but that we focus on our God and what He has in store for us. We allow Him to order our day, show us what is important and rely on Him to help us.

We can still be "busy" and do this! Every soccer season I usually have a bad attitude about all the busyness. I am trying hard to stay away from the bad attitude this year! God knows what has to get done. I have laundry right now that needs to be folded. I have dishes in the sink, but yet I felt God speaking to my heart to rest.

I've had headaches on and off this last week. Had my neck adjusted, taken naps, taken meds, still suffering. Talking with someone today, they asked me what had changed this last week. I thought back, I had dental work, probably not the culprit. I added a storytime, 2 soccer practices, 1 football practice to my already busy life with 4 kids....Hmm! I had a check in my spirit...."you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about". The person I was talking with asked if I had relinquished it all to God. Yeah! Um...honestly....NO! I haven't. So, here goes, "God, you know my heart, and I am searching for yours, I want to be effective in my home, in my family, in my world. Please show me the "best" every day, help to pull me back on track when I start to go astray. Keep my heart tender to your voice and your urging. Make me stop to enjoy you, and what you have made, the people you have put in my life, and the comfort of your Holy Spirit. Thank you God for your great mercy and love and that no matter where I am you can lift me out of the miry clay and set my feet upon the Rock!!!

Toddler sleeping delusions

Our last Saturday before soccer begins. No where to be, nothing pressing to do....Gray skies, cool weather makes for great sleeping in...

Except, we have a sweet toddler girl who would sleep until 7 or 7:30 on school days (yes that is sleeping in around here), but today has to awake before 6! Hubby went in and tried to reason with her! Yeah, that worked!!???!!

So I picked her up and brought her into our bed, with hopes of more visions of sugarplums. Yeah....not happenin....

First she struggled free from my arms and touched Dad's face. Dad rolled over and ignored her to which she began chanting, "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, Daddy" 10 million times.
I snuggled her, she kicked me.
I tried giving her some space, she grabbed my arm and pulled it back around her.
She kicked me and jumped on the bed.
She used the bed as a drum.
She talked. What's with all the repetition?
She has some kind of a secret conspiracy going on with the cat too. He was meowing and running all over the house.
Why did I think she would go back to sleep? She is 2, and a bundle of energy....

I gave in....and got up....took her down to breakfast...to which she said "Dark in here, mommy?!" and I very calmly stated, "That's because the sun is still sleeping and I wish we were too!"

Oh well, plenty of time to sleep later,

Girl struggles

For the past year or so I have struggled with some insecurity and worrying about what others think about me or "perceiving" disgruntlement, real or imagined. I have come to a point that I know that what truly matters is how God sees me.

I need to focus on Him, what His Word says about who I am in Him and what He thinks of me. Whether or not others want to be around me or not should be irrelevant, as long as I am listening and following His direction and calling on my life.

But, as a woman, we are easily wounded. I see this as my oldest daughter enters junior high age. She has just started 6th grade and is struggling a little with girl relationships. She isn't the popular one. She is the hard worker that does well in school. She is the one who everyone wants to be friends/partners with when a project is due, but is rarely invited over to "hang out" or sleep over. My heart aches for her and even as I type this I know that as much as I want for her to be "included", it is so much more important that she feels God is her source and not "others". Excuse me while I grab a tissue...

I think this hits particularly close because I was the same way and distinctly remember how much it hurts.....

In fact I still feel often like the same insecure girl on the periphery, trying too hard.... Actually, sometimes, it is easier to not try at all, because rejection hurts too much. UGH!

Operation Organization Week Four!

This week has flown by! I found myself scrambling today to complete my week 3 goal. If you missed it last Friday, my goal was to tame my spice cabinet and utensil drawers in the kitchen.

So without further adieu, here are the before pics again -

I have filled up my spice rack. I changed the bottles to reflect the spices I use most frequently! I love my Dymo labeler!

I also have separate baskets for Italian, Chinese, and Mexican spices. I have a basket for sprinkles and extracts, etc. I purchased baskets at Target and Dollar General and spent a total of $14.

I plan to used my labeler to label the baskets too, but I haven't had a chance today.

The utensil drawers still seem a little cluttered to me, although they are better. I washed them out and pitched pacifiers that haven't been used since last summer! (Among other things!)

So, what's next weeks goal you ask? How can I find anything else that needs organizing? I've already done the linen/art closet, tamed the shoe mess, and now the spices and utensils. What could be left you ask? I am warning you that this isn't pretty and these images may be disturbing.... My "pantry" cabinets need some work! Here is the before -

Shameful!!!

So I buckled down and spent hours cleaning out this closet! I threw away two bags of stuff, have a bag of old linens to donate, and here are the after pics.

One problem I had was keeping all the sheet sets together. I heard someone say recently that they folded the fitted and flat sheet and put them inside the pillowcase! Brilliant! Used that idea!

My goal for this week -

Three kitchen utensil and gadget drawers and my spice/baking supply cabinet.

This just needs to be cleaned and purged!

I received the copy of "How Do You Know God's Your Father?", and although I haven't finished it, I have already gained insight from the first few lessons. I like the Bible text being in the margins of the study book, so you can mark it up like crazy!!!

Scenarios series for girls

When I "met" Nicole O'Dell several months ago in blogworld and found out that she was publishing a series for girls that emphasize choice-making, I was so excited! I immediately asked to be involved in promoting these books.

I have 11-year-old and 9 year-old daughters and they are growing so fast. One of my goals is preparing them to consider their options and make good, educated decisions. These books present girls with dilemmas common to teenagers and gives them the opportunity to choose as the character. I like the fact that the books stress the idea of facing consequences for our decisions.

My 11 year old daughter read "Truth or Dare" after I read the books for this review. I wanted to share her thoughts with you -

The book Truth or Dare is a story of Friendship and temptations. The Truth or Dare sleepovers start as harmless pranks but soon the Dares get bigger and more risky. When Lindsey promises to choose Dare, her friends choose something that could disappoint her parents and God. With friendship on the line, YOU have a decision to make, what should Lindsey do?

I think she summed it up nicely, didn't she?

We also discussed the book when she finished and she told me, "It's really easy to say what you would do in that situation when you are reading a book, but real life is a different thing."

Truth or Dare and All That Glitters are the first two books in the Scenarios series. The series is targeted at 10-15 year-old girls.

The Grand Finale

Day 6 is here! The Finale of the 2009 family staycation!! It was a good and busy day again today. First we went to the old Union Station building that has been renovated into a Museum and entertainment complex.

We went to the travelling Narnia exhibit which unfortunately would not let us take pics inside the exhibit.

Then courtesy of the internet, we enjoyed a free visit to the Science City Museum for kids. It is fun! Two floors of science related interactive exhibits.

Hubs and the boy really enjoyed playing this pipe instrument with flip-flops.

Then we crossed the street to Crown Center and had lunch at Fritz's. The food is just diner hamburgers, but the delivery style is unique.

We visited this free exhibit of "lego art" All the mosaics and sculptures are made completely of legos!

Then we went to the Crayola store. There are lots of fun things in this store.

Then it was back home for another mandatory rest period. Then we had a pizza indoor picnic and watched a movie.

We also had an impromptu beauty session.

Now, we are ready for school to start. Well almost. We need to get a little rest first! Thanks for sharing the fun with us this last week! Anyone need a travel agent?

Staycation Day Five (aka mommy needs a nap)

I seriously considered our day today as my cat woke me up at 6 am, digging his incisors into my ankle. (Yes, I decided to let him live!) We had ambitious plans. We are all a little tired. We are having a hard time because of the age span of the kiddos (2-11), finding things that keep everyone entertained. Yes, it is a good opportunity to teach that being part of a family means that you are not always going to be entertained. It is an opportunity to instruct that family vacations are a little "give and take." But, in the spirit of honesty, all I want to do when a child zooms thru a display/event faster than the speed of light and declares, "Is this ALL we are going to do today?", all I want to do is scream and lecture on gratefulness and privilege. That and maybe a little discipline...,

This morning we headed approximately 1 hour north of home to St. Joseph, MO. It is an area rich in history and museums.

Our first stop was the Pony Express Museum and thanks to a coupon in a travel guide, we were able to get all 6 of us in for $8. The museum is housed on top of the old site of the stables for the Pony Express! They had lots of hands-on exhibits, and memorabilia and a play area for the kiddos. This went over extremely well!!

Across the street from the Pony Express museum is a park with this huge engine. We had to walk over and have a look!

And of course, what do my children find on this huge engine? A new friend! A tiny new friend! Not the huge engine that captures their attention, but this does!

You saw it right? Yes, they wanted to bring it home. And even though it reminds me of my childhood kitty, NO THANK YOU! One set of cat incisors in my ankle are enough, thank you very much!

So once I was labeled the meanest mom ever -

Our next stop was the Patee House Museum. It was a little more expensive but probably worth it! I wouldn't truly know, because of the aforementioned "zooming" thru. It was originally a hotel, was an office for the Pony Express, was a women's school, a garment factory, a Union headquarters during the Civil War, a sanitarium for epileptic patients and now is a museum. The architecture is beautiful and the place is packed with artifacts! Hubby and I could have spents days there! They also had an operational carousel that the kiddos enjoyed.

We then drove to the Remington Nature Center. We enjoyed our picnic lunch there. The nature center was also filled with interactive displays for the kids. It had a wonderful paved walking trail right along the banks of the Missouri River too! It was very nice and also very affordable. If you are bothered by references of man being millions or billions of years old, be forewarned that there is some of that here. If you look past that and discuss it later, it still had a lot to offer. Some great Indian artifacts and an aquarium too!

This is one of the coolest interactive exhibits I have seen. It walks you thru different wildlife and characteristics about them and their tracks "magically" appear in the sand!

Staycation Day Four

Lesson learned today - stay flexible (and no, I don't mean physically)! We had planned on going fishing today and then going to a free outdoor concert this evening. However, the 100 degree weather was not conducive to happy parents or children outside all day. So we made a visit to a local museum of History. It was free and OK. Not great, not bad, just ok. They did have some hands on exhibits for the kiddos that they enjoyed. One was a stage with props and curtains. We enjoyed a show or two!!!

One humorous anecdote - Gigi is afraid of chickens! There were several stuffed chickens in the museum and she screamed and ran when she saw them, chanting, "I skared mommy! Chicken skary!" Made the rest of us giggle...

Then we had ice cream cones and tried really hard to see who could finish theirs without dripping ice cream all over their clothes! LOL

Once again pics weren't allowed in the museum. Sorry. Then NiNi and I did a little shopping and after dinner we all sat down to watch a video.

Staycation day 3!!

Well, paradise had to end sometime, didn't it?!

We did not start off on the right foot today. We all got out of bed around 7 and everyone was tired and dragging. I had to get after NiNi 5 times minimum to get dressed. Then had to send her back to change twice because the clothes she had picked out were "play in the mud" clothes.

We were all tired and snippy this morning. Bad combo!!!! Strike one.

So we headed off to the City Market. It is a huge farmers market and collection of stores, restaurants, and craftsmen. We bought some produce, Italian sodas and cinnamon rolls and enjoyed live harp music.

We strolled and did a little window shopping. The kiddos weren't impressed. Strike two!!! We were going to stay there and have lunch, but by 10 we were dragging four bored kids!

So we headed for our afternoon destination a little early. We went to the Toy and Miniature museum in Kansas City, MO. It is an old home that has been renovated and built-up to accomodate the collections.

Unfortunately, the only photography allowed was in the storytime/craft room, so I can't show you the amazing exhibits. We spent 3 hours there and didn't peruse nearly as long as we could have. Dolls, dollhouses, trains, pez dispensers, marbles, miniatures of all kinds.....my goodness. It was affordable, however, since we arrived at 10:30 and spent 3 hours, the kiddos got hungry and cranky toward the end. Strike three! BTW - if you are wondering, my 9 and 11 year old daughters loved this, my 6 year old son was good for about the first hour and my toddler for about the first 30 minutes. There isn't a lot of hands-on stuff, although they did have one craft and a couple of scavenger hunts. Definitely a must do for older kids in KC!

Then we had barbecue for late lunch and came home for a rest.

After a mandatory rest period (any Amazing Race fans?) we hit a home-run or two and the day took a turn for the better. We broke out the yard sprinkler and the water guns. The heat index here was over 100 today. The kids had a great time.

Then we enjoyed a dinner of our market bounty! I taught the girls to shuck corn.

Lastly, NiNi wrote and performed a puppet show for us all! Unfortunately I can't share pics because at the beginning of the show, she informed us that cell phones and flash photography were not permitted during the show! LOL NiNi was very patient with GiGi, who kept sneaking up to steal the puppets! We all had a laugh!

It ended up being a pretty great day!

Staycation Day two

Today we headed to a local Botanical Garden (Powell Gardens east of KC metro) for their annual butterfly festival. We have never been to this garden before, but it is beautiful!

We then came home and the kiddos had a Wii carnival games tourney and then homemade pizza and a movie. I'm bushed!!

Staycation Day one

Today was Family Staycation Day One! On the agenda was a round of mini golf and a visit to the outdoor community theatre showing "The Wizard of Oz".

Nini got a hole in one on the second hole, only the second time she has ever played mini golf!

ShaSha took everything very seriously and didn't miss very many of the hazards.

The boy enjoyed "guiding" the ball, OR using the club at a baseball bat.

Gigi enjoyed hitting the ball on the first two holes, but then she discovered the water hazards and enjoyed picking up all the balls and throwing them in!

Then, tonight we went to see the Wizard of OZ. Here everyone is enjoying cotton candy before the show. I am a mean mom. This was the first time that 3 of my kiddos have ever had it! (It was Dad's idea tonight!)

The acting, staging and costuming was very good! Gigi loved the Munchkins so much she bonked her head into my face and gave me a fat lip! I love the full lips of Angelina Jolie, but not this way! (And no, I am not sharing any photos!)

Our reward for this day? Some great smiling faces, laughter, memories, oh yeah - the fat lip and a sunburn for mom too!

Tile Backsplash DIY

We have lived in our current house almost 6 years. We bought the house with lots of plans to update and change things, but it always seemed like once we had the money saved to do something, there was something more important to dedicate the money to. We have decided to do little things ourselves (or try to) to save money.

I have to admit that we don't have a lot of experience "doing" home projects, but we like to watch DIY. I also admit I was nervous that we might become a "Renovation Reality". If you haven't seen it, it is a show that chronicles the experiences of people doing DIY projects and frequently biting off more than they can chew (so to speak) and practicing Murphy's law.

When we moved in the backsplash was only behind the drop-in range and was pink/blue/white tile (I wish I had pics).

I painted the tile first and the paint peeled.

I didn't start taking pics until after hubby had ripped down the tile and taken down the vent hood.

The Amish people and stories surrounding their practices fascinate me. The fact that they live with so few material possessions and so few modern conveniences makes me wonder why I can't make do with less sometimes.

The first challenge

Today is the first day of Melinda's Operation Organization challenge. For eight weeks starting today, we all pick an area of our homes that NEEDS some ORDER. We announce it on Friday (starting today) and then work thru the week to complete it. Pop on over using the button in the right sidebar to check out the rest of the details.

Now for my First Mission (yes I choose to accept it, I even created it!) HA!

First, I have to tell you, I love shoes. I wear mostly flip flops for casual wear, but like some variety with in the flip flops and I love dress shoes, especially little flirty ones! So I buy/own/hoard shoes!

Before I show you my "before" pics, you have to promise not to cringe. This is all about keeping it real and honest and trying to improve our lives.

With that said - This is my current organization system.

I know - embarrassing!

This is what happens when we are running late and I can't find matching shoes -

And I also have a bad habit of discarding my shoes wherever I walk into a room. (I have mentioned before - I am a barefoot kinda gal at home!)

So in addition to cleaning up this mess, I am also going to attempt to keep my shoes in one place in the house or put them away.

Is it bad when you pull into the gas station with the 32 oz yummy iced coffee for 74 cents and your toddler starts chanting, "Coffee, Coffee, Coffeeeee!!!?"

Is it bad when your 6 year old son in the car notices a McDonald's bag and tells his father - "Mom must have needed coffee. She's crazy when she doesn't get her coffee!"?

Is it bad when the barista at the Target Starbucks remembers you and offers the extra shots when he sees you?

I love me some coffee. I am probably (read definitely) an addict.
